Elon Musk Wants To Build Underground Tunnels To Reduce Or End Traffic

When Elon Musk puts his mind to something, he generally achieves it. If his latest tweets are anything to go by, Musk is about to revolutionize transport as we know it.

Well, he is doing that already with a string of amazing accomplishments at Tesla and SpaceX. The latest project he looks set to tackle is tunnels. After the frustration of being stuck in traffic recently he first tweeted: “Traffic is driving me nuts. Am going to build a tunnel boring machine and just start digging…” That was at 3.05 on 17 December. He later added to that saying “It shall be called “The Boring Company” and Boring, it’s what we do.”

By 6.17 the same day he was still tweeting about his new venture, confirming:” I am actually going to do this” He has not told us exactly how he plans to do this yet but as an advisor to Trump he may well have the means to do it. Trump has promised so spend $1 trillion improve American infrastructure and reshape American roads. He even went so far as to update his bio on Twitter to say: “Tesla, SpaceX, Tunnels (yes, tunnels) & OpenAI.”

I think we should start taking the serial entrepreneur seriously. There is no doubt that the county needs it and if anyone can get it done, it is Musk, especially if he has Trump behind him. Musk obviously has a lot on his plate already. His SpaceX company is hard at work preparing to colonize Mars and provide accessible space travel. Tesla is making huge progress with electric cars and SolarCity is doing amazing things with solar energy. He is also very involved with artificial intelligence, specifically through his non-profit organisation OpenAI.

Musk received the role on Trump’s advisory team even after saying this about the President Elect: “doesn’t seem to have the sort of character that reflects well on the United States.” So he has the vision, the company name and even the slogan which he has shared with his 6.4 million Twitter followers. This is not the first time he has shown an interest in tunnels so he has clearly been thinking about it for a while. Getting stuck in traffic was enough to really get him going.

He spoke at the SpaceX’s Hyperloop pod design competition earlier in the year and was very positive about the idea of tunnels. During the Q&A session he had this to say: “It’s a really simple and obvious idea and I wish more people would do it: build more tunnels,”. He went on “Tunnels are great. It’s just a hole in the ground, it’s not that hard. But if you have tunnels in cities you would massively alleviate congestion and you could have tunnels at all different levels; you could probably have 30 layers of tunnels and completely fix the congestion problem in high-density cities. So, I strongly recommend tunnels.”

Go for it Elon.
