Camaro Z/28 Is Coming Soon And May Prove To Be More Hardcore Than ZL1 1LE

With the recent announcement of the Chevrolet Camaro ZL1, will a Z/28 model be in works? According to Car and Driver, yes, a Camaro Z/28 is coming and pretty soon.

The Chevrolet Camaro Z/28 will be given a makeover to enhance downforce, grip, braking as well as cooling. recent photos show a new aero kit with a larger front splitter and what appears to be an adjustable rear wing. Modified canards at the front of the vehicle, a vented hood to reduce front end lift, these are flanked by two smaller intakes. The body’s fenders are widened to accommodate what looks like very wide tyres with an estimated 21 inch rim.

If the rumours are correct, the Chevrolet Camaro Z/28 will be fitted with a Next-Gen LT V-8 engine under the hood. These engines feature dual overhead camshafts with four valves per cylinder. Delivering in the range of 750 horsepower, the engines are reportedly code names LT6 and LT7. For comparison, the 2017 Chevrolet Camaro ZL1 produced 640 horsepower from the same supercharged 6.2 litre engine as used in the Chevrolet Corvette Z06.

Details aren’t readily available, but it would appear the power will come from the same supercharged LT4 V-8 used in the Chevrolet Camaro ZL1. The previous Camaro Z/28 was different from the rest of the Camaro family because of its engine. Other model Camaros utilized a 6.2-liter V-8, naturally aspirated or supercharged, the older Z/28 boasted the naturally aspirated 7.0-liter LS7 V-8 also used in the C6 Corvette Z06.

A six speed transmission should come standard, but with General Motors new 10 speed automatic debuting in the Chevrolet Camaro ZL1, it may be an option for the Z/28. Chevrolet is busy with its sixth generation Camaro line up, remastering the success of the fifth generation Camaro. The Chevrolet Camaro Z/28’s pedigree goes way back to 1967, and only recently reintroduced to the Camaro family late in the fifth-gen model’s life cycle to introduce a no-holds-barred track-focused juggernaut.

Chevrolet is hoping the Camaro Z/28 will grab the spotlight from Fords Mustang Shelby GT350 and GT350R respectively. Based on the wide body and styling Chevrolet is putting in a lot of effort to unseat Fords GT350 dominance as the defining muscle car.
