1996 Nissan Skyline GT-R Seized By Customs In South Carolina

All JDM Motors, a company that specialises in importing spare parts from Japan has found themselves in hot water with U.S Customs and Border Protection agents in South Carolina USA.

All JDM Motors Web page and Facebook profile indicate that engines are the firm’s specialty. A post in December on Facebook advertises, “We just received a container full of Skyline Goods! Rb26’s, Suspension, Subframes, Nose Cuts, Wheels. You name it!”

During a random container inspection by the Customs and Border protection agents they came upon a 1996 Nissan R33 Skyline GT-R wrapped in bubble wrap sitting atop a pile of engines and transmissions inside the container.
All JDM Motors stated the Nissan Skyline was a “used breakdown car,” but Customs and Border agents, after hooking up a battery, easily turned the engine over.

The issue here is not the importation of the 1996 Nissan Skyline GT-R, but the fact that All JDM undervalued the containers cargo in the region of $107,000. All JDM declared that the Nissan Skyline GT-R was valued at $800 on the containers shipping documents.

Customs and Border Protection disagreed and found the value of the serviceable Nissan Skyline GT-R at approximately $51,255. Coupled with this All JDM Motors failed to declare a Nissan 180SX front end and 56 used transmissions. As per the law, that is not allowed.

“JDM is under investigation for falsely classifying their merchandise, undervaluing their merchandise and smuggling goods into the United States,” according to court documents cited by The Post and Courier. There is no issue in importing vehicles like the Nissan R33 Skyline GT-R into the United States, but registering the vehicle and making it legal on the roads is an entirely different thing.

There is the “25 year rule”. Vehicles which are at least 25 years old are exempt from all the red tape and legalities. The rule enables vehicles as new as 1992 eligible for registration in the United States, so in 2021 this particular 1996 R33 Nissan Skyline GT-R will become eligible for registration and become street legal.
